    • "Selection Success!" should have a spot in your AEC firm library
"Selection Success!" by Lori Stanley and Hilari Weinstein, is a thorough primer on the science and art of winning a qualifications-based selection (QBS) process. As with many of the "how-to" books you'll find in our industry, the book offers its highest value to the novice, walking the reader through the fundamentals of submitting a […]

    • Bleeding edge or leading edge
Do you need to bleeding edge to be leading edge in your marketing strategies?By "bleeding edge", I mean, far at the tip of risk --testing untried and new concepts, soaring to the heights of creativity and accomplishment to get it right? The answer is, unequivocally, "No".Most construction industry marketing is in the dark ages compared to […]
    • What do you want to hear?
Yesterday, an electrical contractor phoned me to receive some advice on how to market his idea. He planned to start a design consulting service where people would obtain his advice on the overall project before getting started. My initial reaction: "This will be a hard sell" because of the trust problem. Why should anyone go to him for this level of […]

    • AIA Architecture Billings Index posts slight improvement
The American Institute of Architects' yo-yoing Architecture Billings Index returned to its July level with its September ABI rating of 43.1, up from 41.7 in August and matching its 43.1 number from two months ago. That July number was a six-point increase over June, so it's starting to look like August's number represented merely the latest in […]

Interesting thing happened this week at PSMJ...for the last several years we've used the same company to do our credit card transaction processing. Their services are behind the scenes and about as commoditized as you can get. Other than the transaction statements they send to our bank, we never hear from them.We were approached by another transaction p […]

When is the last time you did a vanity search to monitor your online reputation?  {In short, vanity search means you search for your own name (or as more of a stretch, your company name) on the internet to see what pops up, and in what order.} (Online) reputation management has become a true-blue industry. This [...]
    • Give ‘em something to talk about
In any economic climate, it’s important to offer value propositions that will both intrigue—and ‘stick’ within the minds of—your prospective clients. But in an economy where more competitors are flocking to the same sources for far less new business opportunities, it’s even more imperative to have something that stands out and makes your firm dif […]

Part one of this article (see September 2009 Modern Steel Construction) addressed the question of what social media is, and what makes sense for the AEC professional. Part two covers making wise decisions on how and where to become active within the social media community. Because you are an AEC technical professional, social media is clearly [...]

Become a Resource

Great post from John Kreiss on his blog for MorganSullivan the other day.  Kreiss referenced an article by Terry Brock about how social media is changing the way we develop our business relationships.  Interesting to see how we were all used to traditional advertising; which, compared to the new tools an A/E firm can use can be quite expensive.

Social media allows companies to capitalize on viral, or word of mouth marketing.  Brock recommends being a resource for prospects that your firm want as clients.  Being an advocate or resource is a great way to begin the relationship building process.
