Transparency was a popular word in last year’s Presidential campaign, and I personally believe that transparency is very important when it comes to managing design and construction firms. Show me a firm with low morale and high turnover, and I’ll show you a firm with communication breakdowns in the organization, Show me a firm that shares information with its people and listens to those who do the work, and I’ll show you a firm with higher morale and lower turnover. Here are a few tools that can help facilitate the communication process:
Share the company business plan with all employees. Most people who work at a company care about the company and want to know what the goals are and how they can contribute to its success.
Communicate expectations and conduct employee reviews regularly. Employees want to know how they’re doing even if they’re not doing well.
Post financial results on a company Intranet page or internal company blog. Often, the rumor mill is much worse than the actual performance and it’s important for people to know the facts even when they’re not so good.
Invite people at the staff level to meet periodically with top management. Having staff level people meet with the top managers is an opportunity for both parties to communicate with each other. This can help identify and resolve potential problems within the organization. .
Conduct confidential employee surveys and report the results. Many employees will not share concerns publicly for fear of jeopardizing their employment. Confidential surveys can help uncover many of these areas of concern.
It’s amazing how dysfunctional organizations can become simply because people either don’t talk to each other or misunderstand views from the top. Preventing these types of breakdowns is important and managers who take steps to listen to the people they depend on each day will do better than those who don’t.
